Certified Illumine Mind Mapping Trainer™Frequently Asked Questions
Becoming an Illumine Certified Mind Mapping trainer is a great opportunity for experienced trainers to add a new skill for themselves and their clients. We have tried to keep the process as straightforward as possible, but you may well have some questions. Below we have included some of the questions (and their answers) that we have come across already, but if you have any others please contact us.
I have heard that Tony Buzan has a trainer accreditation scheme called 'Buzan Licenced Instructor' (BLI). Is the Illumine scheme competing with the BLI scheme and if so how is your scheme different from his?
Tony Buzan is the originator of Mind Mapping and has, over the years, had a number of schemes to licence trainers to teach Mind Mapping. We have the utmost respect for Tony's work and do not consider ourselves as being competitors in any way. The Buzan certification includes a great deal of information about the brain and includes videos of the brain and of Tony Buzan presenting. It is a 4 day course and costs around £4,000 per person. Successful completion of the course allows the trainer to call him or herself a 'Buzan Licensed Instructor' or BLI.
The Illumine Certified Trainer scheme is aimed at experienced business trainers who are likely to be able to pick up and understand quickly how to teach Mind Mapping effectively to other people. The emphasis in our train the trainer programme is on simplifying and demystifying the process of Mind Mapping as much as possible to enable you to teach the technique in such a way that your clients will, as ours have, gain enormous benefit from Mind Mapping and from their investment. We have deliberately structured the programme so that it is relevant and affordable - whilst remaining, in our view the best Mind Mapping accreditation scheme available anywhere.
Do I need to attend one of Illumine's Mind Mapping courses before attending the accreditation course?
This course has been created for those who have already attended the Illumine Business Mapping or Mind Mapping for Education course, and have gained experience in Mind Mapping themselves. However in the past we have also been able to accommodate 'Buzan Licensed Instructors' (see above) who want to understand better how to teach Mind Mapping to demanding business audiences. Mind Mapping, Business Mapping, Spider Diagrams, Idea Maps etc. - what's the difference and which one are you teaching?
In the 1960s Tony Buzan was examining the ways in which effective people (contemporarily and historically) put their thoughts (and those of others for learning purposes) down on paper. He concluded that the most effecive notes used lines, pictures, codes, colour, patterns, links - as well as words and sentences. He started experimenting and in the 1960s designed a process, building on what had gone before, which he called the Mind Map. Since then there have been many other systems that built on Buzan's Mind Map and/or also built on these other processes that, as Buzan himself points out, have been around in various guises for thousands of years. Buzan has written about Mind Maps in nearly 100 books so they are very much in the public domain and it is natural that people will develop them in different ways - sometimes calling them different things.
We believe that we maintain true to Buzan's technique without being slavishly attached to it - we embrace ways in which the basic technique can be and is, enhanced as people have used it more and more for real business purposes.
Will I be able to teach Mind Mapping on behalf of Illumine once I am accredited?
Yes - if you are good enough! We have a great team of Mind Mapping trainers but are always interested in finding more, as demand for training in Mind Mapping is growing around the world. Of course we make no promises that we will be able to provide work for trainers, but all of our trainers started by becoming accredited and then building their skills and proving that they were good enough to work with our clients who expect the best available trainers.
I want to be able to offer Mind Mapping training to my own clients - is this the right scheme for me and how does that work?
When you become an Illumine Certified Trainer, you will be able to use a comprehensive set of linked Mind Maps to deliver your courses, together with a course manual which you will purchase directly from Illumine.
Are Illumine really the best people to provide this training?
We believe so. Illumine's founder, Clive Lewis, has been using Mind Maps since 1978 in a career spanning financial management (to Finance Director) and Consultancy, as well as training. This programme (and all of Illumine's courses) is therefore highly practical, and represents the distillation of all of Clive's experience in using and teaching Mind Mapping around the world over many years.
