The Brain Book - An illustrated guide to the structure, functions and disorders of the human brain The human brain is the body part that makes each of us what we are – unique individuals. Here the latest findings in neuroscience and state-of-the-art imagery combine to provide an incomparable insight into the brain’s form and function. Through unique computer-generated 3D images and stunning graphics, you’ll explore the brain in unprecedented detail. From its function as the hub of the nervous system to schizophrenia, discover how the brain works and why it malfunctions. Gain insight into such esoteric aspects as behaviour, language and communication and discover the nature of genius. Incisive, clear and authoritative, this is an essential human brain manual for students and healthcare professionals, and is also a comprehensive reference book for the family. |

| Mapping the Mind - The brain has been the last "terra incognita" of the body for medical exploration, largely because its matter is so different from that of the rest of the body. In 1986 the eminent evolutionary biologist John Maynard Smith identified the problem of how the brain works as one of the two outstanding problems in biology (along with how a simple egg develops into a complex adult organism). Most of us have experienced some apparently inexplicable quirk of the mind, such as selective memory loss. Without obvious "hard wiring", anatomical "labels" or other guiding features, medical scientists have struggled to identify its parts, their functions and connections to the mind. Not that this has stopped curiosity; there is anthropological evidence dating back some thousands of years for crude but sometimes successful attempts to open the skull and get at the brain.
Rita Carter is an award-winning medical writer. (Medical Journalists' Association prize for outstanding contribution). In Mapping the Mind she explores the landscape of the brain and its connections with the mind. We should all be enthralled by this adventure for "it is giving us greater understanding about one of the oldest and most fundamental of mysteries--the relationship between the brain and mind". Carter introduces the subject with the historical background of anatomical discoveries and emerging theories of brain/mind connections. The famous tragic story of the 19th-century American railway worker, Phineas Gage, is here. An iron rod blasted through poor Phineas's skull. It entered below his left eye and exited through his skull roof, removing a large chunk of his forebrain. Amazingly, Phineas survived but his personality was radically changed, as was reported by his doctor, John Harlow. In this fascinating and well-illustrated book, Rita Carter shows just how far we have travelled in our understanding since the mid-19th century world of Dr Harlow and gives a sense of how far we still have to travel. As she says: "The world within our heads is more marvellous than anything we can dream up". The last few decades have seen a revolution in non-invasive brain mapping thanks to the scientific miracles of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and associated technologies. It is now possible to see which part of the brain responds to specific stimulation in real time. As Rita Carter says: "The challenge of mapping this world...is currently engaging some of the finest scientists in the world". |

Multiplicity: The New Science of Personality - In MULTIPLICITY, Rita Carter - award-winning science writer and international speaker - offers a new and vital understanding of personality. Rita explains that nearly every one of us is a team of personalities, working together, for the most part, to give the impression of a unified self. We are used to thinking of ourselves as one thing or the other - either introvert or extrovert, say - but things are rarely that simple for most of us. That's why we sometimes feel like a different person depending on mood, company and surroundings, why we sometimes suffer unaccountable memory lapses, why we buy something we then decide we didn't want in the first place, or why 'somebody else' turns off the alarm clock in the morning. Importantly, MULTIPLICITY is also a practical guide to building a happy 'household' of personalities, explaining how to identify these different versions of ourselves and how to enable them to co-operate so that we can function successfully in life. MULTIPLICITY is both an eye-opening and highly practical account of personality. |

Use Your Brain to Beat Memory Loss: The Complete Guide to Understanding and Tackling Memory Loss - The fourth title in an all-new series exploring how to cope with problems of the mind What we know about the workings of the human brain has increased immeasurably in recent times. We now know exactly which parts of the brain react when we feel panicked, depressed, or overwhelmed emotionally. It is this new science which can help us to understand how our brain generates the feelings we experience and, in turn, how we can control those feelings. Our capacity to remember things can be affected by age, disease, or damage to the brain. This book examines which parts of the brain govern memory and how memory loss can be controlled. A combination of cognitive therapy exercises to retrain the brain and advice on drugs to suit individual needs are provided to improve the problems of both short- and long-term memory loss. | |
| Use Your Brain to Beat Panic and Anxiety: The Complete Guide to Understanding and Tackling Anxiety Disorders - A practical handbook that reveals the role of the brain in anxiety disorders and gives guidelines for effective treatment with a range of therapy options. What we know about the workings of the human brain has increased immeasurably in recent times. We now know exactly which parts of the brain react when we feel panicked, depressed, or overwhelmed emotionally. It is this new science which can help us to understand how our brain generates the feelings we experience and, in turn, how we can control those feelings. Everyone is affected by feelings of anxiety and panic at some time. By explaining which parts of the brain are affected and how these reactions can be controlled, this book provides practical guidance on conquering specific phobias as well as help for general anxiety issues.
