How to Increase Your Energy

energy and well beingMany days can be long and tiring. There is so much to do at work every day, and then you often go home and face a whole new list of things to do. At times it can feel never-ending. Falling into bed exhausted every night is pretty standard for most people. But do you ever wonder if this is the only way to live your life, or are there ways to increase your energy?

Having enough energy is vital to enable you to perform to the best of your abilities at work and home. Lacking the energy to complete tasks without a huge effort can leave you feeling overwhelmed and stressed. If you finish a day feeling like you’ve been running on a treadmill that keeps speeding up, you feel depleted of energy. This affects sleep, mood and motivation. Low energy levels at the end of one day also have a knock-on effect, so you start the tasks of the next day with fewer reserves of energy available.

Taking regular holidays to fabulous, relaxing destinations, or time out, is not an option for most of us. So, if you have low energy and find you are scraping the bottom of the energy barrel at the end of too many days, what can you do to increase your energy? Let’s have a look at this issue and how you can make some simple changes to reboot your energy and help you feel energetically fighting fit.

Are Your Energy Levels Low?

The first thing to do is identify if your energy levels are too low. Some people seem to have a bottomless pit of energy whilst others become exhausted more easily. It’s all to do with your physiological and genetic make-up. Consider these questions to find out if working to increase your energy could improve your experience of life:

Answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the following statements:

  1. I have enough energy to get through my day without needing high sugar snacks or caffeine.
  2. I experience job satisfaction more days than not.
  3. My current level of health isn’t causing me concern.
  4. I exercise at least three times a week.
  5. I eat balanced meals and don’t feel many urges to binge on carb-heavy foods between meals.
  6. My sleep pattern is good.
  7. I regularly find time for myself.
  8. I have time each week to engage in hobbies or activities I enjoy.
  9. It’s not often I fall asleep in front of the TV in the evening.
  10. At home, I generally keep on top of daily chores.
  11. I laugh at least once a day.
  12. Most of my tasks are not rushed.
  13. I spend quality time with my friends and family.

If you’ve answered ‘no’ to five or more of the statements, you may be suffering from low energy levels. Let’s have a look at some simple changes to make to increase your energy.

Tips to Increase Your Energy Levels

  1. Drink More Water โ€“ Your level of hydration substantially affects your energy levels. A recent study of people who drank less than 1.2 litres of water a day found their fatigue decreased when they drank more water.
  2. Exercise More โ€“ Strange as it may sound, doing more actually helps you increase your energy. Try adding a daily brisk walk into your routine.
  3. Diet โ€“ Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Also, choose slow release carbs like whole grain and brown rice and pasta rather than quick release carbs like sugary snacks, white bread, white rice and pasta. Slow release carbs don’t make your energy spike up, which inevitably leads to a rapid drop.
  4. Sleep โ€“ Follow effective sleep hygiene to ensure your body is regenerated at the start of each new day.
  5. Eliminate Stress โ€“ Stress drains energy. Address your stress levels. Perhaps try meditation or yoga.
  6. Toxins โ€“ Toxins stress your body and deplete your immune system. Limit your intake of alcohol and eliminate cigarettes.
  7. Energy Diary โ€“ Keep a record of your daily energy levels, along with a diary of your activities, food, water intake and mood. Use this to identify anything that appears to impact your energy.
