Left Brain, Right Brain – Information

Illumine Training - Parts of the brain

The use of the terms ‘left brain’ and ‘right brain’ are used extensively. And of course the terms don’t refer only to the physical positioning of parts of the brain within the skull. The reference is to the different skill sets that are said to be predominantly housed within different parts of the brain.

In recent years, the theory, which gained prominence in the 1970s and 80s, has been questioned, as the skills themselves appear to be rather more distributed than was once thought. However, the fact that the skill sets exist and that different people use different sets of skills means that the model of brain dominance is still a very useful one.

We use both right and left ‘sides’ of our brain on a daily basis. Interestingly enough most of us seem to be more orientated to using one side or the other. Normally behaviour and personality indicate a person’s more dominant side.
